The Google link is via Waxy, who I must correct: there's a big difference between 50 random New Yorkers and 50 random people in Times Square! (I bet 80% of those people are on their way to the Times Square Applebees.)

Aside from the fact that 50 people is a terrible sample size, it seemed like the question was actually prefaced with, "Can you sign this?" or "Hi I'm from Google." Most of the people seem to be saying 'search engine' because they are aware that the guy is from Google and know that Google is a search engine. I'm sure if he asked "Do you prefer Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or a different browsers?" they would all know what he's talking about.

Two rhetorical questions: 1. Aren't all man-on-the-street interviews a form of recycling? 2. But shouldn't tourists who planned their NYC trip with Travelocity know what a browser is?

Was Google out to prove that the common man does not understand all this stuff and does not really care? If so, why the hell did they make Chrome?
