The Girlfriend Is Experienced

Sasha Grey lists her five favorite films. 5) Herzog's Stroszek, 4) Breillat's Fat Girl, 3) Godard's Pierrot Le Fou, 2) Cassavetes' A Woman Under The Influence, 1) Carpenter's Escape from New York. Yipe.

I call bullshit. No one has that for a Top Five. She's trying way too hard, especially by putting John Carpenter at #1. Snake Plissken 4LIFE, no doubt, but blogga please... best movie ever? Nope.

I dunno. My top five would include Godard, Antonioni, Hitchcock, and Wong Kar-Wai.

But I try too hard too.

Agreed. The fact she name drops directors in every freaking interview is lame. (Cat Fancy: "Siamese or Tabby?" Sasha: "Oh I love me some Herzog...").

I understand the dichotomy of porn vs. intelligence she's trying so hard to project, but she ain't no Diablo Cody. At least she was somewhat believable.

Selling yourself for sex is the ultimate selling out, no matter how much hipster cred you think you got.

Still don't get the media fascination with this girl. Couldn't care less.

great list, not far from mine. no matter who she is, it's a great list. totally believable for a literate film buff.

so she's into folks knowing that she knows... no different from any precocious and slightly pretentious twenty-something.

Right, that's an impressive list for a 21 year old. Non-obvious choices, indicating an actual interest in art rather than a boyfriend guiding her to the cool. Pretty consistant taste in things too (someone who like Current 93, probably really gets Stroszek too). So what makes her frequent (obscure/dark/intellectual) cultural references any different than what your typical indie band lead singer does in interviews? She is curious and introspective in a way that many men find threatening, whether someone fucks for money or not.

@joanne: Yeah. In fact, I think it's the combination of that smart introspection and the 'fuck yes, I fuck for money' attitude that is threatening to a lot of men. Porn is frequently exploitative and misogynistic, but I'm not sure Sasha Grey is one its victims.

Non-obvious choices, indicating an actual interest in art rather than a boyfriend guiding her to the cool.

It's clear no boy would have picked those choices, for reals.

She is curious and introspective in a way that many men find threatening. I just think fucking for money shouldn't be the new resume builder for future actors, I guess. Just seems sorta gross.

This whole porn + indie thing is played out. Suicide Girls, Diablo Cody, etc, etc ... it just seems pre-packaged. I'm all for spreading good taste, but it just seems the actress is being marketed with the movie, Juno-style. It'd lame and phony. It's been done a billion times.

I'm all for good taste, but I'm not sure why "fucking for money" now equals "gets to share her movie preferences in major media outlets."

That's a surprisingly interesting movie selection. I'm actually quite interested to watch her performance in the gf experience now after seeing the video. I know it hasn't been rated as all that good & there's been a ton of hype about her in general but she across like someone who might manage the crossover from the adult to the mainstream movie industry.
