NYT Article Skimmer
Kinda cool from NYTimes.com: Article Skimmer. Much better than navigating the homepage, right? [via]

I like this. It's been bothering me lately that it still feels easier to read a physical newspaper than to navigate the mess of information on a newspaper site. <br /><br /> <br /><br /> Was also thinking today that it's interesting that the the NYT has not only become this locus for content online - i.e. they generate much of the discussion/links - but are also seem to be experimenting with the tech and infrastructure of the shift to digital.

Not much different than an RSS feed of any of those sections, but I like the idea of it living on the NYT site. I'll probably use this.

I really like this. It's super easy to read and amazingly efficient. Sort of validates Michael Wolff's Newser design (and, before then, Sploid) - except without the garish pictures. Sploid hurt the eyes and Newser does too - too many clashing images distracting from small headlines. I like this design because photos, if any, are small and subservient to the actual news you're there to skim. I'm bookmarking this page. (Also that First Look blog is great.)

This reminds me of a layout of a flash site from several years ago that changed headline sizes and colors based upon google news mentions. Can't seem to find the site.

Am I the only one who prefers a linear RSS feed to a grid layout?<br /><br /> <br /><br /> Seems easier to scan vertically rather than horizontally.<br /><br /> <br /><br /> Still, I'm in favor of anything that will kill the traditional newspaper front page.<br /><br /> <br /><br /> Also, no ads on the grid. Wish every paper had the guts and/or financial freedom to innovate that NYT does.<br /><br /> <br /><br /> I love this idea but if any other paper tried to launch an alternative web home with no ads on it, their marketing people would scream bloody murder.<br /><br /> <br /><br />
