The Wrestler

Several things that don't make sense together: Requiem for a Dream director Darren Aronofsky + former Onion editor Robert Siegel + Wild Orchid actor Mickey Rourke + Jersey singer Bruce Springsteen = The Wrestler. [via]

you know what also doesn't make sense? that Mickey Rourke likes chihuahuas.

This film looks interesting and good. And I can fill in one solid blank regarding why Robert Siegel wrote this: He loves old-school wrestling. Quite possibly the nicest gift ever given to me while on staff at the Onion was when Rob gave me a CD of the 1985 album The Wrestling Album. In fact unlike another cohort I yammered about in another post (*cough* Ben Karlin *cough*), Rob actually got gifts for everyone on staff at the Onion when he was in charge, and was (and I hope still is) a nice guy. Yeah, his ego swelled when the Onion hit bigand he treated himself to a girlfriend upgradebut I'd trust his talent and creativity far more than others (see above).

Just don't expect this film to be funny. Because I love Darren Aronofsky's work, but he's pretty humorless in his vision.

I heard about this and thought it sounded awful. And it does sound awful. But after watching the trailer I can say that it looks good.
